My Name is Loh Kiwan brings tears of sadness and joy to the audience

South Korean drama film My Name is Loh Kiwan is based on the novel I Met Loh Kiwan by Cho Hae-jin from 2019. The movie itself was directed by Kim Hee-jin and released on Netflix in March 2024. In the leading roles, you can enjoy actor Song Joong-ki, known for example for his expressive performance in the Descendants of the Sun and Vincenzo, and actress Choi Sung-eun, known especially for her recent roles in The Sound of Magic and Beyond Evil.

What is the film My Name is Loh Kiwan about?

It tells the story of a North Korean refugee who managed to get to Belgium after his mother’s death. He is trying to hang on, survive, and get a residence permit. You can watch such a challenging life story of a young man who has decided not to give up even though life is giving him a hard time. The initially unpleasant encounter with a former shooting athlete Maria, who is dealing with her own traumatic experience, will bring additional motivation to his life. Although the film is definitely not a sweet romance, their love for each other will help them both heal old wounds and bring back Maria’s will to live. But before that, they must overcome difficult obstacles.

Is there a happy ending in My Name is Loh Kiwan?

Spoiler alert! If you’re the kind of viewer who doesn’t want to see sad endings, I have good news for you. Loh Kiwan and Maria will be reunited at the end of the film after a necessary separation. So, after the whole roller coaster of emotions during the movie, I was really moved to tears of happiness. I enjoyed the whole movie experience and loved it!
